Musician Roger Davies rehearses Fenella the Tiger at Nabb School
Pupils from Holmfirth High School, Upperthong J&I School and Holmfirth J&I School worked with Sharing Memories and folk musician Roger Davies to write and perform a whole new collection of songs about the Holme Valley

Initially the group went into Holmfirth High School and worked with 11 of their music pupils writing and devising songs which could be sung by local Primary school children.  They came up with a number of themes and one of the most popular was about Fenella the Tigress who lived in Holmfirth during the 1940s.  Other songs used words written by our members, including a song called Beautiful Vale written by 87 year old Kenneth Haigh and adapted by Roger Davies.  The High School pupils also devised their own songs and music based on some of our members' stories and experiences.

Armed with a collection of brand new folk songs themed around the Holme Valley Roger and the group went into primary school to teach the songs to two classes of Year 4 children.  The project culminated in a wonderful concert, featuring all the children involved, as part of Holmfirth Folk Festival in May 2012 - which was attended by over 500 people.

Copies of the DVD or CD can be bought (price £5 each) from Sally Brown email or call 01484 968551

Our thanks to Roger Davies and to our funders, Arts Council England, Holmfirth Festival of Folk,  the One Community Foundation (Longley Farm Grassroots Fund) and Colne Valley Mummers.
